Spanish Town Police won 2-1.

After going 11 matches before getting their first taste of victory in their debut Jamaica Premier League (JPL) season, Spanish Town Police Football Club recorded their second win in three matches after a hard-fought 1-0 win over fellow promoted team Treasure Beach on Sunday.

Treasure Beach had defeated their nemesis 2-0 in the opening round of the JPL, and the team was only able to muster two draws before their dramatic win over Waterhouse two weeks ago.

Although they were brought back down to earth by Mount Pleasant, who beat them 5-0, assistant coach Spencer Williams insisted they have faced their baptism in the top-flight and have learned their lessons harshly but are now aware of what it takes to win points in the league.

"Playing against better teams, we made mistakes but we have learned a lot from those losses. So we are trying to do some things differently and see how best we can move forward and get points," he said.

On Sunday, the league debutants were forced to make some changes to the preferred starting line-up because of the absence of some players. However, they put in one of their better defensive displays and although they didn't create a whole lot of chances throughout the game, they had their opponents on the backfoot for most of the match. Williams said the players had become more positive in training.

"Tajae Harris and the captain Chevon Walters have played in the back before this season and they were the ones who played there in the Tier II also. So it's not really a new set of players that played there. It's just the recommitment of the team in terms of training and the things that we want to do to go forward."

Jordan Elliston, the team's topscorer from Tier II and leading scorer in the JPL with five goals, and who also got the winner in their first win against Waterhouse, was the match winner again, on the night.

The forward fought off two defenders and beat the Treasure Beach goalkeeper with a shot from a tight angle for the game's only goal.

Williams said they are delighted to have picked up a win to start the second round and believes they are much more equipped to compete through the second round.

"This is our second win. It feels great to start the second round with a win. We have trained hard and we know that we have the material to play in this league. We just did not put things together properly. But now we are trying, and we want to play every game on its merit," he said.

Spanish Town Police still sit bottom of the league with eight points, four points adrift of their closest rivals Chapelton and Treasure Beach.
