Single father getting new house - But has no land on which to place it
Single father Jermaine Bentley says he was granted a miracle after he was offered a three-bedroom prefab house, courtesy of a Good Samaritan, US businesswoman Anethan Lothian.
But the Jones Town, Kingston resident told THE STAR, while he breathed a huge sigh of relief, he is yet to secure a parcel of land on which to place the dwelling.
"We have been given eviction notice since January, as the property was sold but, because I had the kids, I was given a little more time. But they are fixing up the property and they are almost finished, so I know I will have to leave soon," he said.
Bentley is a viral inspiration on TikTok, where thousands of people follow his journey as a devoted single father. His videos show snippets of his everyday life - cooking, cleaning, laughing, and guiding his children through life with gentle discipline and endless affection. Bentley said he was contacted by Lothian, who offered to help after seeing him and his children living conditions.
"It was right before the hurricane and the roof was leaking hard, so she reached out to me and told me that she was willing to offer me a three-bedroom prefab house, and she sent me a link on social media and showed me what it look like. The only problem is that I don't have any land to put the house on, but she is also trying to get somewhere for us," Bentley said.
In a previous interview with THE STAR, Bentley said that his two-bedroom house is far from perfect, adding that the roof, which is partially covered by a tarpaulin, leaks heavily whenever it rains.
"Getting a house means everything and, as a parent, I feel like I am getting something that my children need. Right now, the state that I am in, I am very shaky, meaning that I put the best outside so I look strong for my daughter and son, but at nights I cry and pray. I feel Like I am walking on glass with them and I just want them to be comfortable," he said.
Bentley said that, as soon as he settles in the house, he will be able to start a small business.
"Words can't really explain how I feel about getting this house. It is the best thing that ever happen to me. I have got help where food is concerned and I am really grateful. But to be getting a roof over my children's heads is everything. It's a joy and a miracle all in one," Bentley added.
Lothian said she is no stranger to philanthropic acts and stated that she was immediately moved to assist Bentley when she learnt of his situation.
"I give out a lot of these houses in Jamaica so, when I learned about his situation, I wanted to help. I operate a charity but I funded this house from my own pocket. I notice the water was going in on him and the kids and it was just not a good look. It was devastating and I knew I had to help. The house is ready and waiting for him, so it's just to get the land. I have been trying to get a piece of land for him as well. Even if we could get somewhere to lease in Kingston, that would work," Lothian said.
