US search and rescue teams join efforts to help Western Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa
A 30-member search and rescue team from the United States is set to arrive in Jamaica this afternoon to assist with recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa.
The initial team will depart from Virginia, with another search and rescue unit scheduled to arrive tomorrow from Los Angeles, California.
Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States, Major General (Retired) Antony Anderson, discussed the team's arrival during a radio interview on Irie-Jam Radio.
He also said a field hospital from the US is expected to arrive by tomorrow to assist with healthcare needs.
According to Ambassador Anderson, the Jamaican Embassy in Washington, DC--the lead mission--has been coordinating international efforts to support Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, particularly in the island's western regions.
"Several countries have already offered assistance to Jamaica in search and rescue as well as field hospitals," he said.
