Lawrence ‘perfect fit’ for T&T role, says Martinez
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC - Highly-regarded Spanish coach, Roberto Martinez, has described Dennis Lawrence as "the perfect fit" for the Trinidad and Tobago men's senior coach position.
Lawrence, a Trinidadian, was appointed to the top football post here a week ago after serving several years under Martinez in different positions.
Martinez, who is the current manager of the Belgium national side, said Lawrence had served with the same excellence as coach as he had during his playing career.
"Dennis is the perfect fit for the Trinidad and Tobago National team," said Martinez, the former Wigan Athletic and Everton manager.
"He will be an inspiration to any young player and current player who can dream of representing their country in a World Cup finals. Dennis enjoyed that dream being a player who always carried the highest standards in everything he did.
"Those standards have been impeccable in the last six seasons working with elite footballers in the Premier League and in the last five months at international level with his contribution in the scouting department for the Belgium Red Devils."
Lawrence played 89 times for T&T and was part of the historic squad which qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In fact, it was his header against Bahrain in the playoff, which sent Trinidad to the finals.
Following his playing days for Wrexham and Swansea City, Lawrence moved into coaching and served under Martinez at Wigan, Everton and then as a first team scout for Belgium.
